In 1588, “pamphleteers from London to Wittenburg put out the word that Spaniards were an uncivilized, greedy people who reviled in bloodshed and destruction."1 The Black Legend influenced other countries to establish a different connection between themselves and the Native Americans. In the sixteenth century, the enemies of Imperial Spain were outnumbered, but they fought back. The Black Legend originated when Spain was the greatest power in the West.
